Ethics of the Dust
Monique Blom

Collaborating artist Monique Blom is a multifaceted interdisciplinary artist, activist, consultant, and arts educator.  With a profound connection to nature, Blom integrates environmental elements into her artistic exploration. Her expansive repertoire includes performance and public art interventions focusing on the intricate dynamics between women, domesticity, and spirituality.

Together, Ross, Copestake, Blom and JRP’s print team of Hannah Duke and Marcel Houston-McIntosh bring collaborative print practice into focus with Blom’s first print series. It highlights the power of repetition through the exploration of colour captured through film stills from Blom’s generative collaboration with AI.

In the film above, a photograph of the photopolymer plate was taken, and translated and animated in the AI film.

In these short films, Blom is conspiring with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and testing the technology. She speaks of collaboration between herself and AI, a call and response generated on repeat. The two entities learning from each other as they develop the imagery in a continual edit loop. The initial image starts with a performative photograph which is then stylized within the boundaries of machine interpretation. Multiple images are added to the timeline to create a short video and the video is continually prompted by Blom to develop the stylization, theme and editorial direction.

From the film, an image still was captured and turned into a photopolymer plate, which was then inked and printed onto Hahnemühle paper to create a limited edition series of coloured prints.

Studio photographs of developing and editoning the print series.
